YOUNG SINGLE ADULT WARD
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon)

Most people experience the organization of the church (known colloquially as the LDS Church or the Mormon church) principally at the local level, where congregations are organized into wards. The Philadelphia 3rd Ward is a Young Single Adult ward. Its membership consists of about 150 single men and women between the ages of 18 and 30. Roughly half of the members are students attending undergraduate or graduate schools in the Philadelphia area. The other half are employed in the area. Wards are organized into stakes, stakes into regions, and regions into areas, which constitute the major international divisions of the Church organization. The Philadelphia 3rd Ward belongs to the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Stake.

Wards are the basic ecclesiastical units of the Church. The operation of substantially all the programs of the Church take place in wards. A ward is presided over by a bishop and two counselors. These ward leaders serve on a part-time basis.  They are trained and ordained to the priesthood, but receive no financial compensation from the Church for their services. It is the responsibility of the bishop to supervise the conducting of organizational meetings, worship services, and leadership training sessions; to counsel and interview ward members; and to extend invitations or calls to participate in Church service in the ward.

Although the local ward organization meets most of the religious needs of the members within its boundaries, many specialized services are provided at the stake level. In addition, ward officers are in continuing contact with a hierarchy of priesthood leaders linking them directly to the central authorities in Salt Lake City.

The church provides multiple opportunities for its members to serve in formal organizational roles and to perform Christian service for others. Members view their positions in the Church as "callings." Those who are in positions of Church authority seek inspiration from God in determining which member should receive a particular calling and then extend the call accordingly. Most members of the Philadelphia 3rd Ward hold such callings.
