The goal of the program is to provide interested candidates with training
and experience in medical informatics. Areas of faculty interest
include clinical information systems, computer-based decision support,
knowledge discovery, diagnostic imaging systems, and Internet-based research
tools.
The program is open to US citizens who have completed either the MD
or PhD or equivalent doctoral degree. In other respects, the program
is quite flexible and fellows can choose from a variety of training and
research opportunities under the guidance of a mentor and with approval
from the program directors. Opportunities exist for research at the
Philadelphia Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania
in such areas as clinical database systems, knowledge discovery, clinical
decision making and decision support systems, and computer graphics and
image processing.
The program supports salary at $36,000 a year for those with PhDs, and
at the appropriate PGY level for physicians. Physicians may use this
program as the research component of a fellowship in combination with clinical
training experiences.
